Mexican Red Sauce

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

This recipe is super simple to make and will add a special touch to your meals if you enjoy a spicy kick to your food. I like spicy food, but not too spicy; I prefer a mild level to add a spicy touch. I was craving a traditional Mexican red sauce last week, so I decided to make one with the ingredients I had on hand.

Ingredients:

  • 1 brown onion, I used a red onion because it was what I have.

  • 5 tomatoes

  • 2 chillies ( depends on how hot you want it ) I ended up using less than a quarter of one.

  • 1 garlic clove or 1 tsp of garlic paste.

  • Coriander

  • Salt

Instructions

  1. First, in a pan, grill the onion, tomatoes, chilies, and garlic cloves if using; in my case, I didn't have garlic cloves, so I used garlic paste.

  2. Move them around from time to time so that the grill forms all sides.

  3. Set them aside to cool once they've reached that charcoal colour.

  4. Remove the seeds and veins from the chillies.

  5. Blend all the ingredients including the coriander, salt, and garlic paste.

  6. Finally, taste and add more salt if desired. You can also add a little water if you want it to be more watery.

  7. Refrigerate and use in your favourite dishes.
